diamond

every day i spend with you
it's like a slice of pie
sweet and melty and so many calories
and still i always want a second helping

you i sate my sweet tooth on
letting you into my veins like i've got addiction
you, both Eros and Poseidon
stirring sudden waves upon my lonely ocean

and if i could take all the coal in the world
and with my bare hands press it into a dot
i'd have a diamond i would give to you

every hour i spend with you
it's like a bath of light
warm and squinty and it burns so good
and red is what it makes me see and feel

you are the noonday sun
sending shafts of bright into my pool of sorrow
you, the one making my heart thrum
spilling your smile into me so that my cup overflows

and if i with my all pressed hard enough
we'd have ourselves a diamond in the rough

every moment i spend with you
they're like red-hot, heavy lumps of coal
thrown on the flame you lighted in my chest
just when i thought it was pointless for my blood to boil

you are bright fire with hair the hue of lions
making me hot and blue just like a butane lighter
you, the one with sweetness on your tongue
telling me things that make my tides rise higher

and if i could take all the lumps of burning coal
and with my bare hands press them into a dot
i'd have a diamond i would give to you
and yet i'd be afraid it wasn't good enough
for its brilliance would fade if you were in proximity

every day i spend with you
i always want a second helping
every hour i spend with you
it's like a bath of light

every moment i spend with you
the sweetness of you makes my heart thrum

and just when i thought it was pointless for my blood to boil
pointless to stock up on sooty carbon briquettes of any sort
there you shine
a diamond in the sand

and like an eager wave i want to come
envelope you and all your brilliant facets
lift you off the cruel roughness of the shore
and gently, gently, carry you out to sea
