untapped

we would track our relationship by the phases of the moon
and she was full and gorgeous that night we first kissed
shining smile beaming down to wish us two all happiness

like a volcano that hasn't blown
like an iceberg under ocean depths
we were something about to be happening

so how ironic was it that when i drove away for good
she was embarrassedly peeping through my car window
rising reluctantly into the sky with her face turned away from me

like a flower trod on before its opening
like a fetus stillborn in the eighth month
we were something that could have been beautiful

one half of her face in shadow, the other gleaming with shame
she pulsed at me, dull yellow and as jaundiced as i felt
glowing with pity full on her visage as i drove and wept

like a prototype dismantled before the test run
like an experiment deemed unworthy of trials
we were something with massive potential

and she was full and gorgeous that night we first kissed
so how ironic was it that when i drove away for good
she pulsed at me, dull yellow and as jaundiced as i felt

we were something that could have been beautiful
we were something that could have been

we were something too important to have been untapped
