Our Hero

In fourteen hundred ninety-two,
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
He changed this New World, untouched and pure;
but did he change it for the better? We are not sure.

Of course, he "found" an uncharted virgin World,
but into this World pollution he hurled.
His people brought disease and massacred the natives.
The New World was in pain; Her cry was plaintive.

Her people were slaughtered; Her water spoiled.
Her forests were raped, Her hopes were foiled.
Animals died out, never to be seen.
Our nation's eagle may share the same fate, it seems.

People say this nation has amber waves of grain,
but, in reality, it is a place of pain.
