- These 暖簾 ("noren") give the kitchen a "door" and keep strong food smells out of the living area.
30 September:
(Ignore my poorly created panoramic picture above! XD On this day I took my good friend Nna hiking along the coast at Año Nuevo State Reserve, a coastal reserve that sits mid-way between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz on the California coast. My parents and I used to visit it all the time to hike, fish, and have a picnic by the waves. In fact, we relaxed in the H.M.B. area at least twice a month when I was growing up - it was barely twenty minutes from our house on a good traffic day! - and most of the time we drove the extra twenty-five minutes down to Año Nuevo's northern border because it was more remote and less touristy. The day was cloudy but bright, the sun was warm, the wind was strong, and the tide was decidely high. Fantastic!)
- A look up the coastline, facing north.
- Opaque water swirling around a wet boulder as the waves come in.
- Look closely and you'll see a sea otter floating in the waves on its back! Very cool!
- A great look at how the rocky coastline juts out into the sea, from steep cliffs to submerged rocks.
Here's the otter again:

- Waves hit a large rock formation hard, creating a gorgeous spray!
- A really nice photo of a pair of birds captured against the backdrop of clouds.
- The bright sun affects the colors here, but I still like it. Note Año Nuevo Island in the upper left!
- This photo is downright sexy, from the waves hitting shore to the rocks' colors! Check it out!
- Small pools on the rock, formed after seawater was brought there by high tides and winds.
- A huge, panoramic photo that I made poorly/hastily. Facing south, with Año Nuevo Island visible.
- A line of brown pelicans flying just above the ocean's surface.
- Coastal scrub, fully fertile. XD
- A few drops of water got on my camera lens and created this pretty shot.
- A great view of the trail that hugs the cliffs of the shore. I love the color scheme here.
- Another photo with a great color scheme - everything has a cool, aquamarine tint. *_*
- Another panoramic shot. This is a large copy of the one shown at the start of this photo set.
27-28 October:
(So I went on a trip to the University of California Bodega Marine Lab (in Bodega Bay, California) with my physical/chemical oceanography class, and we were there from Friday evening to Saturday evening. The entire trip was fantastic, and the weather was unseasonably gorgeous for late October, as you will see in the pictures below. While it's true that Northern California has great weather and that the coast here isn't nearly as foggy in the fall as during other times of the year, for it to be so cloudless, windless, and mild was amazing! We went out onto the open ocean for a bit in our small boat and the seas were quite calm. Anyway, enjoy the pictures! Oh, and by the way, the above photo is a look at some unfinished wood furniture in the marine lab's dormitory.)
Above the marine lab dormitory, at sunrise:

Facing south. The gray mass juxtaposed with the sundance in the distance is Tomales Point, with the open ocean to the right. The water to the left of it at the very edge of the picture is Tomales Bay:

More from the open ocean, and then back to Bodega Harbor and the docks:
