Ganymede's Lame Astrology Tutorial!
(Click here to return to Ganymede's Personal Horoscope.)
All the information I have typed up below is stuff I have learned/gleaned from multifarious astrology books, most notably: The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need (a gross misnomer, by the way, even though it may be an okay beginning resource) by Joanna Martine Woolfolk. This primer therefore has a rather "textbook" feel to it, which I apologize for, but I have added my own intuitions from what I have learned of astrology and from applying it to people.
The zodiac consists of twelve signs, which are always listed in the following sequence: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Each sign lasts for a period of about thirty days, and the days the signs start on vary a bit every year, except for certain set rules: Aries always begins on the vernal equinox, Cancer always begins on the summer solstice, Libra always begins on the fall equinox, and Capricorn always begins on the winter solstice.

The twelve signs can be divided in various ways, including: duality, triplicity, quadruplicity, and polarity.
LET'S START WITH DUALITY:
Duality is when you divide the twelve zodiac signs into two categories: masculine and feminine. The "masculine" and "feminine" designations have nothing to do with gender - rather, they are more like yin and yang, two halves of a whole. However, yin and yang has negative connotations in that yin is described as "feminine, negative, passive, and weak" while yang is described "masculine, positive, active, and strong." The "masculine" and "feminine" terms in astrology are not meant to be related to gender or to be sexist like the yin and yang designations. Rather, "masculine" signs are signs that are outer-directed, energetic, strong through action, while "feminine" signs are self-contained, receptive, magnetic, and strong through inner resources.
THE "MASCULINE" SIGNS:
THE "FEMININE" SIGNS:
TRIPLICITY:
The twelve signs cans be divided into four groups with three signs each; each group is called a triplicity.
The fire triplicity consists of the three fire signs: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. Fire signs are enthusiastic, energetic, aggressive, and characterized by impulse.
The earth triplicity consists of the three earth signs: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. Earth signs are practical, stable, conservative, down-to-earth (there's a pun for ya), and characterized by material concerns.
The air triplicity consists of the three air signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. Air signs are rational, communicative, social, and characterized by intellect.
The water triplicity consists of the three water signs: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Water signs are deep, intuitive, artistic, imaginative, sensitive, spiritual, and characterized by emotion.
Nota bene: Only and all fire and air signs are masculine signs; only and all earth and water signs are feminine signs.
QUADRUPLICITY:
The twelve signs cans be divided into three groups with four signs each; each group is called a quadruplicity.
The cardinal quadruplicity consists of the four cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. Cardinal signs signify enterprise, outgoing activity, leadership, initiative, and action.
The fixed quadruplicity consists of the four fixed signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. Fixed signs signify resistance to change, persistence, singlemindedness, determination, resourcefulness, and perfecting (as opposed to initiative).
The mutable quadruplicity consists of the four mutable signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. Mutable signs signify adaptability, versatility, openness to change, flexibility.
Nota bene: Each cardinal sign begins at either an equinox or a solstice. Also, zodiac signs can share the same triplicity or the same quadruplicity, but not both. E.g. there are four mutable signs and three water signs, but there is only is only one sign that is mutable AND water. Each zodiac sign has a unique combination of triplicity and quadruplicity:
Aries - cardinal fire
Each zodiac sign has a ruling planet:
Like each zodiac sign, each planet also has its own duality:
Mars, the Sun, Pluto, Jupiter, and Saturn are "masculine" planets.
Venus, the Moon, and Neptune are "feminine" planets.
Mercury and Uranus are considered "androgynous" planets.
REMEMBER what the terms "masculine" and "feminine" mean in astrology. "Androgynous" planets evince both "masculine" and "feminine" astrological qualities.
By combining the duality of a zodiac sign with the duality of its ruling planet, one can learn something of the basic nature of people born under a certain sign. Thus:
Aries - is a masculine sign ruled by a masculine planet
THE SUN SIGN:
The sun is our most powerful planet (the sun and moon are referred to as planets in astrology even though they are more properly known as "luminaries"), and without its radiant energy and heat energy, no aspect of life as we know it would exist on earth. It is therefore also the most important/powerful influence in a person's astrological chart: it helps shape how others see you, your individuality and style, the way you think, the signature behind your drive to fulfill your goals, and perhaps even the type of goals you have.
Keep in mind that while a full horoscope is like a complete portrait of you, your sun sign alone is merely an unfinished outline - in other words, knowing only your sun sign will give you only a general, basic description/outline of yourself. Each person has a Sun sign, a Moon sign, a Rising sign, and a host of other planetary influences, and if one finds that one doesn't quite fit their sun sign, one might well find the answer in a *full* horoscope analysis. For our purposes then, a sun sign, the sign we're talking about when we say "Hey baby, what's your sign?" is really a "perfunctory glance" describing an entire group of people born during a set time period that occurs every year. In short, a sun sign profile can be highly insightful, but the caveat to keep in mind is that it is not the be-all and end-all of your horoscope. While the Sun sign may give a basic description of what kind of person you are, in no way is it fully accurate; in order to get a full picture of any person you must take ALL their other signs into account. Taking all signs into account is what a birth chart does.
The Sun, which is Leo's ruling "planet," is the planet of pride, vitality, and authority.
CUSPS:
Some people are born near the time when the Sun is leaving one sign and entering another sign. For instance, if you were born on May 21, you would be born on THE day that the Sun was leaving Taurus and entering Gemini. This would mean you were born on the CUSP of Taurus and Gemini. This merely means that you evince qualities of BOTH Taurus and Gemini. If you were born within five days of the cusp, you'd still most likely be influenced by both signs.
DECANATES:
Each sun sign spans about thirty days, and each thirty-day period is divided into three ten-day periods called decanates (from "dekanoi," the Greek word for "ten days"). Each zodiac sign has a first, second, and third decanate. The decanate is like a more specific description of your sun sign, with its own ruling planet and special qualities. The ruling planet of your decanate is considered your "planetary subruler."
For instance, I am a Scorpio, ruled by the planet of Pluto. However, I was born during Scorpio's second decanate, which runs from November 2 to November 11. This particular decanate is ruled by Neptune, so I am a Scorpio who is SUB-ruled by Neptune. This gives me a Piscean/Neptunian qualities (as Pisces is ruled by Neptune), accentuating the idealism of Scorpios and making me more self-sacrificing than people born in the other two decanates of Scorpio.
Consider the decanate as something that adds a more specific flavor to the sun sign decription.
THE MOON SIGN:
To put it in a very basic nutshell, your Moon sign desribes your inner self, your emotions and your subconscious, while the Sun sign is more your outer self, your thoughts and will and actions. The Sun sign is the part of you that others can SEE; the Moon sign represents the part of you that others PERCEIVE, the part of you that only YOU see. The negative aspect is that the Moon sign can also represent that part of your inner core which even you yourself are disturbed by.
Actually, here's a better way to describe it: let's say you were put in a problem situation. Your Sun sign would describe how you would react after thinking the problem through; your Moon sign would describe your gut-instinct reaction to the exact same problem.
I am a Scorpio with Cancer as my Moon sign. In a very basic sense, this means that although I think like a Scorpio, I usually tend to *feel* like a Cancer.
THE RISING SIGN:
The Ascendant (Rising sign) is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the time of your birth. This means that the EXACT time (given in minutes) and place (given in latitude and longitude) of your birth must be known before one can calculate this sign. The ascendant is the sign that reflects your outer self; it is the sign that determines how you interact/deal with others; and it determines how the world looks at you. In other words, the Ascendant represents your image, the door people must pass through to view the house itself; it's the first thing people notice about you when they first meet you. The personality you outwardly project is a blending of your Sun sign and your Ascendant, which makes everyone's image - their impact/projection onto the world - unique. Your Sun and Rising signs determine the part of your personality that people see; your Moon sign determines the part of your personality that people SENSE.
THE MERCURY SIGN:
If Mercury is *prominent* in your horoscope, then its positive aspects are that you are facile in speech, a good storyteller, clever, and shrewd, and you probably have a good memory, good debate qualities, and high-strung movements.
(If a planet is *prominent* in your horoscope that means that that planet is the ruling planet of your Sun sign, or perhaps it's the ruling planet of your Rising sign or Moon sign, OR maybe it's the ruler of your decanate, etc. In other words, a planet that is *prominent* in your horoscope just means that it plays a substantial role in your horoscope chart/birth chart.)
If Mercury is *afflicted* as well as being prominent, then Mercury has a negative influence. Mercury's negative influences include: lies, deceit, petty thievery, fraud, etc.
(An *afflicted* planet means that the planet in question is not in harmony with the other planets and thus has a negative influence.)
Since Mercury is an "inferior" planet (i.e. its orbit lies between the Sun and the Earth) and therefore travels so close to the Sun, your Mercury sign will either be the same as your Sun sign, or it will be the sign that comes immediately before or after your Sun sign. For example, if you have the Sun sign of Leo, your Mercury sign can be one of three signs: Leo, Cancer (which comes right before Leo), or Virgo (which comes right after Leo).
THE VENUS SIGN:
If Venus is prominent, then its positive aspects are that you are one of the most friendliest people to be with, and you have an excellent artistic/aesthetic sense.
If Venus is prominent and afflicted, its negative influences are: lack of willpower, naricissism, and an emphasis on self-indulgence instead of self-discipline.
Venus is an "inferior" planet, so the planet could only have occupied one of five given signs at the time of your birth: your Sun sign, or the two signs before or after it. For example, for anyone whose sun sign is Scorpio, their Mercury sign can be one of five signs: Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius or Capricorn.
THE MARS SIGN:
If Mars is prominent, then its positive aspects are that you possess enormous energy and a marvelous constitution, and you are quick and active, always taking the initiative.
If Mars is prominent and afflicted, its negative influences are violence, impatience, hot-temperedness, and a tendency to accidents.
THE JUPITER SIGN:
If Jupiter is prominent, then its positive aspects are that you are well-liked, popular, broad-minded and cheerful, with success in business, and you have good luck.
If Jupiter is prominent and afflicted, its negative influences are: too much good luck (meaning no chance to develop character), laziness, extravagance, and blind optimism.
THE SATURN SIGN:
If Saturn is prominent, then its positive aspects are that you are able to perfect your character, accept responsibility, etc. You have courage, steadfastness/patience, and integrity.
If Saturn is prominent and afflicted, its negative influences are: solitary life, permanent unhappiness, selfishness, a calculating nature, and various misfortunes.
THE MODERN PLANETS:
The planets Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are known as the "new age" or "modern" planets as their discoveries by humans have been -relatively- recent. Their orbits are so large (and thus they move so slowly through the zodiac) that their influence is more on a generational level than an individual level. Just keep that in mind as you read on.
THE URANUS SIGN:
Uranus relates to the inner will/energy and secret powers, and in that sense it is similar to Mars. However, Uranus governs a more "deep-seated" and profound type of energy than Mars does. For example, let's say Person A is physically crippled, but nevertheless commands extreme power and charisma. Person B is not physically crippled, but has a lot of energy which (s)he scatters about to no purpose. This means that Person A has a strong Uranus and an afflicted Mars, while Person B has a strong Mars and a weak Uranus. Your Uranus sign determines your level of inventiveness and unconventionality, how independent/eccentric you are, and how you deal with the unexpected. Uranus rules over Aquarius (some astrologers consider Saturn and Uranus to be co-rulers of Aquarius).
If Uranus is prominent (hehe), then its positive aspects are that you are independent, resourceful, and you have your own, special style. You have a visionary, humanitarian nature and people are attracted to your "far-out" points of view.
If Uranus is prominent and afflicted, its negative influences are: over-eccentricity, recklessness, rebelliousness, abruptness, and unpredictability.
THE NEPTUNE SIGN:
Your Neptune sign determines the amount of psychic power and visionary thoughts you harbor. Neptune brings understanding, depth of emotion, creative genius, and a contact into a higher plane of consciousness. Uranus' power is forceful; Neptune's is subtle. Symbolically, Neptune represents perfection, your selfless ideals, the spiritual quest, and the impossible dream. Neptune rules over Pisces (some astrologers consider Jupiter and Neptune to be co-rulers of Pisces).
Neptune was only discovered in 1846 and it takes 165 Earth years to orbit the sun, so that means that astrologers will have to wait until the year 2011 to be able to notate Neptune's complete journey through all twelve signs of the zodiac.
If Neptune is prominent, then its positive aspects are that you are multi-talented, especially in art, and you have real creative genius. You are selfless and compassionate, the epitome of self-sacrifice. You are very developed, personality-wise, and you are on a higher level of consciousness (i.e. you have "old souls") than most others. You are spiritual if not necessarily religious, and are likely to be connected some way to mysticism or psychic phenomena.
If Neptune is prominent and afflicted, its negative influences are: lies, deception (of others and of yourself), negative and excessive escapism (e.g. alcohol and other drugs), and an inability to separate fantasy from reality.
THE PLUTO SIGN:
Pluto brings to light things which are hidden in the subconscious, governs the depths of the psyche, and releases dormant forces and suppressed energies. Pluto signifies death/rebirth, annihilation/regeneration, and then complete transformation. Pluto "wipes the slate clean", and is analogous to nuclear fission, which both destroys and creates. Pluto represents THE highest and THE lowest of what mankind is capable. Pluto rules over Scorpio (some astrologers consider Mars and Pluto to be co-rulers of Scorpio).
Pluto was only discovered in 1930 and it takes around 250 Earth years to orbit the sun, so that means that astrologers will have to wait until after the year 2150 to be able to notate Pluto's complete journey through all twelve signs of the zodiac. This means that it is hard as of yet to truly discern what Pluto's influences on our lives are. We have a similar, if lesser, problem with the planet of Neptune.
If Pluto is prominent, then its positive aspects are that you are able to rise to great heights and that there are many times in your life where you will have life-turning changes. You have brilliant careers in uncovering hidden knowledge, whether it be as a detective or as a scientist.
If Pluto is prominent and afflicted, its negative influences are: cruelty, sadism, treachery, crime, etc. Pluto's influence is evinced in both the most idealistic of leaders and the most brutal of dictators.
POLARITY:
The twelve signs cans be divided into six groups with two signs each; each group is called a polarity. (Please note the the following descriptions of each sign in the six polarities are VERY general.) Aries and Libra are a polarity in that Aries is the sign of self while Libra is the sign of partnership. Taurus and Scorpio are a polarity in that Taurus is the sign of material, personal wealth while Scorpio is the sign of spiritual and/or shared wealth. Gemini and Sagittarius are a polarity in that Gemini is the sign of self-expression and thought on a one-to-one basis while Sagittarius is the sign of philosophy and higher thinking on a broader level. Cancer and Capricorn are a polarity in that Cancer is the sign of home life while Capricorn is the sign of public image. Leo and Aquarius are a polarity in that Leo is the sign of personal creativity and pleasure while Aquarius is the sign of hopes and ideals on a larger scale. Virgo and Pisces are a polarity in that Virgo is the sign of work and self-improvement while Pisces is the sign of vision and self-undoing.
HOUSES:
In astrology, your life is divided into twelve "houses." Each house is "naturally" ruled by a zodiac sign. Thus:
The First House of Self is the most powerful house, and it symbolizes YOU. Your personality, inward/outward behavior, the way you interact, etc. It even determines to some extent the way you look. The First House is the lens through which the rest of your chart is seen and interpreted. The First House is naturally ruled by Aries.
The Second House of Possession shows how you make money, how well you make money, how well you handle money, etc. It also predicts what sort of possessions you are likely to keep throughout your life, as well as your financial prospects and what activities may be a good source of income for you. The Second House is naturally ruled by Taurus.
The Third House of Communication (naturally ruled by Gemini) relates to your immediate environment in three major areas: self-expression, family ties, and day-to-day travel. This house also shows how you think/speak/write, and also governs your logic, memory, and ability to learn.
The Fourth House of Home (naturally ruled by Cancer) governs home life in the past, present, and future. It governs home in the emotional as well as the physical sense and relates to the kind of home you make for yourself, your current domestic situation, and even the ownership of land and the kind of security you get in old age.
The Fifth House of Creativity/Sex (naturally ruled by Leo) rules anything you do for pleasure and for the expression of your creative side (including sex). This is the house of your heart. Your sexual side is the large part of this house, and this house rules your love affairs, chances taken in life, new undertakings, arts, and children.
The Sixth House of Service/Health (naturally ruled by Virgo) governs your need to help others and be of service to the world. It rules your relationships with co-workers, employers, and subordinates. It rules your health, as well as how much emotional stress can affect your health, and how good your constitution is.
The Seventh House of Partnership/Marriage (naturally ruled by Libra) shows what kind of mate you get, how often you get in/out of relationships, and also rules partnerships not only in love but in friends, business, and politics. It also shows how well you work with others, and what kind of people your enemies are. The Seventh House, the House of Partnership, is the opposite of the First House, the House of Self (reminiscent of the polarities, no?).
The Eighth House of Death/Regeneration (naturally ruled by Scorpio) is one of the three mystic houses (the Fourth, Eighth, and Twelfth). It rules spiritual transformation, birth, sex, death, the occult, and the afterlife. It concerns legacies and your material and spiritual inheritance from the dead, as well as the conditions of your death.
The Ninth House of Mental Exploration/Travel (naturally ruled by Sagittarius) is like the Third House, only on a much larger scale. This is the House of the higher mind and philosophy, and long journeys of both the mind and body, and it also rules your public expression of ideas.
The Tenth House of Career/Public Standing (naturally ruled by Capricorn) rules everything outside the home, and is the House of ambition/aspiration, material success, and your standing in the eyes of others. It is an outward expression of your talents, and the emphasis you place on effort and responsibility. This house is the opposite of the Fourth House, which is the House of Home Life.
The Eleventh House of Friends/Hopes/Wishes (naturally ruled by Aquarius) has to do with long-term dreams, idealism, vision, goals, and intellectual pleasures. The clubs/politics/work you are involved in is ruled by this House, as well as the type of friends you benefit from and your ability to enjoy other people. This House, which deals with vision and long-term dreams, is the opposite of the Fifth House, which deals with more immediate pleasures.
The Twelfth House of Secrets/Sorrows/Self-Undoing (naturally ruled by Pisces) is the final and most mystical house, and the "end of the circle." This doesn't mean that this house is negative, but this house does define the limitations in life. This is house of karma, of spiritual debt, escapism, disappointments, and life's meaning.
The Houses are important because in your personal birth chart, your Rising sign and Sun sign determine the "set-up" of your Houses. For instance, I am a Scorpio with Taurus Rising. Although the First House is -naturally- ruled by Aries, in my chart, it is -actually- ruled by Taurus (and to a lesser extent, Scorpio). This means that instead of Aries ruling my First House and Taurus ruling my Second House and Gemini ruling my Third House (et cetera et cetera), Taurus rules my FIRST House, Gemini rules my SECOND House, and Cancer rules my Third House, and so on and so forth. Since they are governed by our Rising signs and Sun signs in this way, the Houses are therefore a more unique, more personal influence on our lives than one thinks at first glance. Furthermore, each planet was in a zodiac sign when you were born, and since each sign rules one of the Houses, the placements of the planets affects each house, and thus affects your astrological makeup.

When one says, "I'm a Pisces" or "My sign is Scorpio" or "Hey baby, what's your sign?" one is referring to the Sun sign (also referred to as the "star sign"). From an earthbound view, the sun travels around the earth once every year in a three-hundred-sixty-degree circuit, moving through all twelve signs of the zodiac in the process. Three hundred sixty divided by twelve means thirty degrees for each sign (but not necessarily thirty days, since the sun does not travel one degree of its circuit in exactly one day). The sign the sun was travelling through during your birth is your sun sign.
This sign is the zodiac sign the Moon (ruling planet of Cancer) was traveling through when you were born; the Moon sign is the strongest influence on your life second only to the Sun sign.
This is the sign Mercury was in when you were born. The planet Mercury rules over intellectual energy, intelligence, memory, perception/reason, etc. so your Mercury sign determines how you think, your thought processes, etc. Mercury rules the zodiac signs of Gemini and Virgo.
This is the sign Venus was in when you were born. Venus rules over the higher emotions, love, aesthetics, art, social graces, harmony, and friendships. Your Venus sign determines what sort of sex appeal and personal allure you possess, how you relate to friends and lovers, your artistic leanings, and choice of gifts and adornment. Venus rules over the zodiac signs of Taurus and Libra.
This is the sign Mars was in when you were born. Mars rules over your sex drive, physical energy, and forcefulness/aggression. Your Mars sign determines how you unleash your energy, your physical endurance, your human will, how accident-prone you are, your sex impulses, and what "lights your fire." Mars rules the zodiac sign of Aries, and it used to be the ruler of Scorpio, which is now ruled by Pluto; some astrologers consider Mars and Pluto as co-rulers of Scorpio.
This is the sign Jupiter was in when you were born. Jupiter rules over good luck, optimism, honesty, higher learning, success, and generosity. Jupiter is the planets of blessings - blessings to be used wisely. Jupiter gives knowledge on a philosophical level while Mercury gives intelligence on a day-to-day level. Your Jupiter sign shows where you will have the ability to "expand" and in which areas you'll be able to get the most out of life. Jupiter rules the zodiac sign of Sagittarius, and it used to be the ruler of Pisces, which is now ruled by Neptune; some astrologers consider Jupiter and Neptune as co-rulers of Pisces.
This is the sign Saturn was in when you were born. Saturn rules over responsibility, work ethic, misfortunes, self-control, limitations, and patience. Your Saturn sign shows how you deal with obstacles, overcome misfortunes, and how well you build character. It seems as if Saturn is a stern planet, and it is. However, though the things Saturn governs may seem important and overwhelming, the Saturn sign is only one of many and is not all-encompassing. Symbolically, the Saturn sign represents your destiny, ruling fate, limitations and discipline, the inescapable, and the payments we must make for what we receive. Saturn rules the zodiac sign of Capricorn, and it used to be the ruler of Aquarius, which is now ruled by Uranus; some astrologers consider Saturn and Uranus as co-rulers of Aquarius.
This is the sign Uranus (heehee) was in when you were born. Uranus rules over change, originality, invention (whether it be in art or science), humanitarianism, revolution, and the future. Thus, Uranus is considered a "higher octave" of Mercury, governing the same things that Mercury does, except on a higher, more complex plane.
This is the sign Neptune was in when you were born. Neptune rules over imagination, idealism, mystery, illusion, your dream life, artistic and spiritual vision, mysticism, deception, escapism, and the unexplainable. Thus, Neptune is considered a "higher octave" of Venus, governing the same things that Venus does, except on a higher, more complex plane.
Pluto rules over regeneration, great change, and transformation/transcendence. If you had one of those "I see the light" type moments, you felt the influence of Pluto. Thus, Pluto is considered a "higher octave" of Mars, governing the same things that Mars does, except on a higher, more complex plane.
