Taiki Kou - Astrology and Mythology
| Taiki and His/Her/Its Sunsign Taiki is a Gemini (Gemini - the Twins - third sign of the zodiac). I really don't know Taiki well enough to say with confidence how well he/she/it matches the Gemini persona, but it seems to me that there are good connections between Gemini and Taiki. Taiki is as smart as Ami and the Outer Senshi, and while Geminis are not automatically genii (in fact, the Outer Senshi's zodiac signs - Aquarius, Pisces, Scorpio, and Capricorn - are better known for being the signs of genii), their qualities of rationality, quick mental perceptions, and flexibility make them very likely to be mentally and academically strong. The fact that Taiki's favorite subject is literature (he/she/it is in the literature club and he/she/it also likes to recite poetry) is also a very Gemini trait, as Geminis are very much interested in language, literature, and other such forms of communication. Also, Gemini is an air sign, which fits in with the fact that "taiki" means "atmosphere" (or literally "big air," har har *L* :p), but other than that, Taiki isn't that much of a Gemini: he's/she's/it's much too prosaic and staid to be a typical Gemini, who would be much more mercurial, much more witty, flirtatious, and playful. Of course there was that episode where Taiki put a pink bow on his/her/its head, but still. XP *L* The ruling planet of Gemini is Mercury. Taiki's Mythology Unlike the Inner and Outer Senshi, Taiki and the Starlights do not have specific planets that they take their Senshi names from - they come from a distant solar system where their home planet is Kinmoku, and I don't think they have planets in their solar system named Fighter, Maker, and Healer. :p However, the Starlights do have ruling planets for their zodiac signs, so we can discuss the mythology related to those ruling planets (in Taiki's case, mythology about the god Hermes). Hermes, the Greek herald god, god of cunning, intelligence, commerce, trickery/thievery, crossroads, communication, and invention, is the son of Zeus and Maia, the daughter of the Titan Atlas. Hermes learned to talk, invented the lyre, stole cattle belonging to his half-brother Apollo, and earned a place in Olympus with his cunning... all before he was two days old. It's natural that Taiki and the sign of Gemini be linked to such a god. Mythology Behind the Constellation Gemini Tyndareus, King of Sparta, had a wife named Leda whom Zeus, king of the gods, fell in love with. Zeus "visited" Leda in the form of a swan and soon after Leda gave birth to two eggs. o.o; When it hatched, the first egg had twins, a boy and a girl (Polydeuces and Helen) who were immortal children of Zeus and Leda; the second egg also had twins, a boy and girl (Castor and Clytemnestra) who were mortal children of Tyndareus and Leda. Helen married Menelaus (they ruled Sparta together) and was later to become the prize over which the Trojan War was fought, while Clytemnestra married Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks in the Trojan War and brother to Menelaus. As for Castor and Polydeuces, known as the Dioscuri ("striplings of Zeus") and as the Tyndaridae ("sons of Tyndareus"), they grew so close that they were never seen apart from each other. Both men were incredible athletes and fighters, but Castor was known more for taming horses while Polydeuces was known for his skill as a boxer. One day, the two brothers got into an argument with two other brothers (Idas and Lynceus) over some cattle, and in the dispute Idas killed Castor, Polydeuces killed Lynceus, and Zeus rather belatedly lent a hand by killing Idas with a thunderbolt, leaving Polydeuces as the only survivor. Polydeuces was so distraught over losing Castor that he prayed for his own death even though he was immortal. Seeing this, Zeus took pity on his son and allowed Polydeuces to give half of his immortality to Castor, and thereafter the brothers lived together on Mount Olympus half of the time and spent the other half in the Underworld (they lived on Olympus every other day). Often depicted riding white horses, Castor and Polydeuces became known as the patron gods of sailors, and they were quite popular with the ancient Greeks (especially with male couples) for their beauty and their love and devotion to each other. The constellation Gemini - the Twins - was made by Zeus in their honor. |
